History
The Toy Fox Terrier originated in the United States in the early 20th century. They were bred down from Smooth Fox Terriers with some toy breeds, possibly Chihuahua and Toy Manchester Terrier, thrown into the mix. Over the years, Toy Fox Terriers have found work as ratters, hunters of small prey (often carried around in hunters' saddle bags), and even as circus performers. They were especially skilled at performing acrobatics and walking the tightrope. Today, they are a popular companion breed that shares the personality of a terrier and the charm of a toy dog.
Breed Characteristics
While not all Toy Fox Terriers share the exact same personality and temperament, there are certain generalizations that can be made about the breed. In addition to genetics, a dog’s environment, training, socialization, and many other factors all contribute to their personality and behavior.
